History and Development of Gottman Method
The Gottman Method is a type of couples therapy that is based on the research of Dr. John Gottman. Gottman is a psychologist who has studied couples and marriage for over four decades. The Gottman Method is a relatively new type of couples therapy, having been developed in the 1990s.
The Gottman Method is based on the idea that relationships are like ecosystems. Just as in nature, there are different elements that work together to create a healthy system. In relationships, these elements include positive emotions, negative emotions, communication, conflict resolution, and intimacy. The Gottman Method focuses on helping couples to create and maintain a healthy balance of these elements in their relationship.
The Gottman Method is also based on the idea that couples go through different stages of development. There are four stages of development in a relationship:
1) The Romance Stage
2) The Power Struggle Stage
3) The Cooperation Stage
4) The Intimacy
